5 Easy Steps to Edit Your Promotional Video
If you are creating a promotional video for your brand, business, or band, you may be wondering where to start. Editing is a time-consuming task but the creative rewards are massive and your promo video could be the most effective marketing content that you’ll create. You can create a promo video with little to no budget and you can even shoot and edit your video on your smartphone.
Here are 5 tips to create a great promotional video from your video footage!
SELECT YOUR MUSIC FIRST, THEN EDIT
Choose a song that fits the mood and aesthetic that you want your promo to embody. Think about pacing, you can even think about it in terms of beats per minute (bpm). How fast or how slow do you want your video’s pacing?
Once you’ve selected your music, you can use it to place emphasis on certain aspects of your footage to make the cut more interesting.
How long will your clip be?
You can create a workspace in your video editing software that is the exact length that you need your clip to be and then get to work editing your footage! When deciding how long you want your clip to be, think about video time limit constraints on your preferred social media platforms.

ADDING EFFECTS IN AFTER EFFECTS
Once you’ve completed your rough edit, you can use After Effects to create custom lower-thirds and animated titles. You can also use After Effects to animate your logo.

ADD SLOW MOTION, KEYFRAME PUSH IN’S
You can add Slow Motion effects and keyframe push-ins to make your footage more visually interesting. You can do this in After Effects or Premiere Pro. Motion Array has a great tutorial on creating a Slow Motion Time Stretch in After Effects.
FINE-TUNING YOUR EDIT
Edit your rough cut. Let go of footage that doesn’t add to your story. Remove the cuts that you think are cute but might confuse the viewer; save those for the blooper reel or for social media, if you’d like.
We call this “killing your darlings.” Review your footage, make sure everything makes sense. Review your audio for any necessary adjustments. When you are satisfied with your footage, render your file. Review your footage there twice to make sure everything is rendered correctly and looks and sounds right.
COLOR CORRECTION
Once you are done with your main edit, you can use the Lumetri Panel in Premiere Pro to color grade and give everything a consistent look. You can use the Basic Correction tab to fix your white balance, exposure, contrast, and Hue Saturation.
If you want to know more about color correction, Adobe has some great articles that cover the topic.
